Abstract
The present study aims to find interrelation between local festivals and drinking environment upon monitoring the drinking scenes at 10 local festivals celebrated in Jeollabuk and Jeollanam provinces during 2009 and, based on such findings, to suggest the directions for policy-makers to take.
It was found from the monitoring that there were various factors encouraging drinking at local festivals but were little struggles to prevent such environment. From the analysis of interrelation between local festivals and drinking environment, it was also revealed that there was statistically significant relationship between chances for drinking provided at festivals and alcoholic drinks awarded as prize.
It seems thus desirable to cultivate healthy drinking environment, to install systematic measures to control drinking, to legalize identification of individuals as a means to inquire into their age, and to initiate campaigns and education for festival organizers and liquor sellers to prevent drinking. Civil ombudsman as well as reward systems should also be introduced to foster healthy drinking culture at festivals, it is suggested.
